Description
Drosanthemum hispidum is a hardy succulent groundcover and is indigenous to Southern Africa.
It has been attributed the common name “Rosea ice plant”.
About the genus Drosanthemum
This is a genus of succulent plants in the ice plant family (Mesembranthemum) that are native to the southern regions of southern Africa. Most species bear colorful flowers in an extraordinary display.
Drosanthemum are sometimes referred to as “dewflowers”. The name Drosanthemum means “Dew-flower” in Greek, and refers to the characteristically shiny structures that cover the plants leaves and flowers.
Leaves of Drosanthemum hispidum
This species has small evergreen leaves which are fascinating and glittery.
The glittering on the surface of the leaves is caused by tiny cells that store water which then reflect sunlight (helping to cool the plant).
Growth habit of Drosanthemum hispidum
This succulent spreads and forms a carpet of magnificent, glistening, magenta-pink flowers from spring and summer.
Many different pollinating insects love these flowers which in turn bring friendly birds to manage the insect populations.
The plants usually form a low-growing shrub that is up to or exceeding 50 cm across.
How to grow Drosanthemum hispidum
Plant in full-sun (6-8 hours at least per day) in well-drained soil.
Drosanthemum hispidum works well in a rockery, embankments (stabilisation), hanging locations, or in a mass-planted flowerbed.
A collection of these plants creates a absolutely breath-taking display.
Furthermore, Drosanthemum hispidum makes a good and reliable pot/container plant (they create a lovely hanging look).
